"Surfing Favela" was shot with the aid of the communities of Cantagalo and Rocinha; the latter, with its 250,000 inhabitants, is considered the biggest slum in Rio de Janeiro. The documentary richly portrays the daily tasks of a group of surfers that helps the youth of their own community to discover in surfing, a direct bridge to freedom and nature. The characters spend their days between the hills and the sea, trying to turn their projects into a sustained reality. But with so many difficulties and opposing forces, their small actions become nothing but truly enormous feats. Their testimony is a new generation of young surfers who defy their environment’s limitations by choosing the surfing lifestyle over the never-ending cycle of local violence, corruption and drugs.

"Surfing Favela" was selected as a finalist for the THE FUEL EXPERIMENT, an international contest sponsored by Fuel TV(USA)  and was the only Latin American Project to reach the Top Ten. The contest granted the complete funds to make “Surfing Favela” a reality.
